Toro Verde GT continues to make positive improvements in maiden Porsche Carrera Cup GB campaign

Toro Verde GT headed to Oulton Park in the picturesque county of Cheshire to take on rounds five and six of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at the weekend (June 11/12), with Scot Ross Wylie joining the team in expanding back to a four-car line up.

The team benefited from an official pre-event test on the Wednesday before both of Friday’s free practice sessions, giving the drivers more crucial seat time ahead of the weekend contest.
 
A notoriously tricky track on which to overtake, qualifying performance would prove crucial, but unfortunately the team’s early pace on used tyres wasn’t matched when switching to fresh rubber mid-session, giving everyone plenty of work to do in both races.
 
Sadly, for Peter Kyle-Henney, race one was over before it truly began as contact from Michael Clark sent him onto the gravel at Knickerbrook and into retirement. The Safety Car was called to help recover his car, before the race was red flagged to properly allow for clean-up to take place.
 
Restarting based on race positions before the red flag, Jake Giddings was up into 13th, and climbed further up on the restart, crossing the line seventh in the Pro class. Despite struggling with grip, Angus Whiteside was exhibiting good pace in Pro-Am, running over five seconds clear of Mark Radcliffe and taking the flag sixth in class. Already feeling at home, Ross made up two places to be classified fifth in Pro.
 
It was another tough start for Peter as he stalled off the line for race two, falling to the back of the pack. Playing catch up, he had the pace to catch the cars in front but had to settle for sixth in Am after 20 minutes of action. Locked in a race long battle with fellow Pro-Am Nathan Harrison, Angus put in a stellar defensive drive to maintain the edge over his rival, crossing the line fifth in class. In Pro, Ross and Jake struggled to make up places, finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
 
Scoring points and continuing to learn more about the 992-style Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars and its performance under varying track conditions, Toro Verde GT left Oulton Park in a positive mindset despite the setbacks. The team will next travel to Knockhill in Scotland for rounds seven and eight of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB season over the weekend of July 30/31.

Jake Giddings #41 (Pro)

G1 – 12, R1 – 7
G2 – 7, R2 – 7 

Championship: 10 (7 Points)

“Free practice on Friday was good, and we had good pace on the old tyres. Unfortunately, when we headed into qualifying, we struggled to switch the new tyres on, so we didn’t get a good time and that hindered us. Race one went well, and I got a good start. There was a little bit of carnage that we managed to avoid. The steering was knocked out a bit as a couple of cars clattered into me as we went down into Cascades, but we got away with it. I got away well at the restart and through more carnage to finish seventh in class.

“I had another good start in race two. I had a go at making some moves in the beginning and then levelled off. Because the touring cars had been out and put down rubber, we were struggling with all-round grip. Everyone just got going and then stayed as they were. It was incident free, so there were no mistakes to capitalise on. We found some speed over the weekend. We just have to sort out how we perform in qualifying, because when we’re up there, we can stay there.”

Ross Wylie #59 (Pro)

G1 – 7, R1 – 5
G2 – 5, R2 – 6

Championship: 9 (7 Points) 

“All in all, it was a solid weekend. It was my first time back in the championship, and it’s always difficult jumping into it midway, especially with a new car, but Toro Verde have given me a fantastic opportunity and a fantastic car all weekend. I did the Wednesday test which was my first time in the new 992 and the characteristics are significantly different to what I was expecting. The other car was quite raw, and the 992 feels closer to a GT3 without ABS or traction control, so I do feel a bit more at home with my GT background.

“We had good pace right from the word go. It’s always interesting at race weekends when we all have different rubber going down and that’s when the people with experience in these cars really excel. In race two, I would have liked a little bit more pace, but the track did change quite a lot. I had a major lock up into the hairpin and lost a position so unfortunately didn’t make any progress, but the car is back in one piece and we’re all still smiling. The team have made me feel incredibly welcome and comfortable, so it has been a weekend that I won’t forget for a while.”

Angus Whiteside #52 (Pro-Am)

G1 – 6, R1 – 6
G2 – 6, R2 – 5

Championship: 7 (20 points) 

“Qualifying was good. The first run was great as I was first in class before going down to third. Then I screwed up on the second tyre run and went off at Cascades just as the tyres would have been primed. I kept working the tyres on the Safety Car laps during race one, but it just wasn’t enough to keep them up to temperature. I was struggling with rear grip and was sliding all over the corners, but towards the end it got better. The track didn’t seem to have as high of a grip level as it did in the morning. I was happy to stick with the pack and we dropped the guys behind us. We’re chipping away, getting faster and faster, and we’re more in the mix every race.

“For race two, I was a bit sceptical because I was starting 17th. They brought the Pros up in front of all the Pro-Ams, so I was further back than I thought. I tried to follow the Pros through, but I was too busy defending from [Nathan] Harrison behind me. He kept pressure on me all the way through and I kept locking my front and rear wheels because I was so determined to keep him behind me. He eventually touched me, and I lost the rear and had to go straight over on the chicane, but I maintained my position until the chequered flag. I finished fifth in Pro-Am and 12th overall after gaining five places, so I’m happy with that.”

Peter Kyle-Henney #22 (Am) 

G1 – 5, R1 – DNF
G2 – 5, R2 – 6

Championship: 5 (20 points)

Qualifying was quite good. We were reasonably well up with the first set of tyres, and then we put the second set on, and I didn’t quite get them up to pressure. We were hoping for a few more laps than we got out of it and, whilst we improved, it wasn’t quite enough. The others were a few tenths up the road, but I’m not too disappointed as it was very close. Race one was only half a lap, not the longest race in the world. Unfortunately, Michael Clark coming into the hairpin, either touched the grass or lost control and came down the side of the car, took the front wheel off and damaged the rear suspension. Then he went into the back of Nigel Rice as well. He did come over and apologise, we’re all gentlemen racers, and that’s racing.

“The second race I did all by myself. I stalled it on the grid and had to chase everyone down. We got back to them, but the cars are very similar here and you need a little bit of an advantage to overtake at Oulton Park. I missed the last two years, so coming back into the championship I did need to do more testing, so it was useful having the Wednesday session. Moving forward, I just need to get on top of the car properly and get back to where I was before.”
